Frequently Asked Questions

What is a travel nurse?

A travel nurse is a registered or enrolled nurse who takes on short-term jobs in different healthcare settings across Australia. These jobs usually last from a few weeks to several months and offer flexibility and diverse experience.

Workplaces for Travel Nurses Include:

  • • Public and private hospitals
  • • Aged care facilities
  • • Remote and rural clinics
  • • Correctional facilities
  • • Community health services

Travel nurses are essential for filling staffing gaps and ensuring patients receive quality care where it's needed most.

How can you become a travel nurse in Australia?

Step 1: Get Qualified
You’ll need to obtain a Diploma or Bachelor of Nursing and register with (AHPRA).

International nurses might need extra registration steps.

Step 2: Gain Experience
Usually you will need to have 12 to 24 months of clinical experience, but this can vary. Specialties like Emergency, ICU, RAN and regional Aged Care workers are in high demand.

Step 3: Boost Your Skills
Consider getting certifications like Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Life Support (ALS).  Specialty training can also help increase job opportunities and pay.

Step 4: Apply for Jobs
Use agencies like E4 for job hunting. We offer a variety of contracts type, great rates and flexible work options allowing you to work around your commitments. If you’re flexible with locations and shifts you’ll have a better change at being successfully placed.

What visa do I need for travel nursing?

If you're an overseas nurse, Australia offers visa options for travel nursing, like:

Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) Visa (Subclass 482): Allows employers to sponsor skilled workers temporarily.

Working Holiday Visa: Permits short-term work for eligible countries.

Skilled Migration Visas: Ideal for those seeking long-term opportunities.

To work as a nurse in Australia, you're responsible for:

AHPRA Registration: Complete the required steps with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

English Proficiency: Demonstrate competency through recognised tests like IELTS or OET.

Qualification Recognition: Overseas credentials must meet Australian standards.

Note: E4 doesn't provide sponsorship. You must secure an appropriate working visa, complete registration, and meet regulatory requirements.

How much do travel nurses make?

Rates will vary depending on State and Territory, and time of shift (AM/PM/Nights), as well as if it's regional, rural or remote.

Pay can also change depending on your experience and specialty. At E4, you could earn up to $90 per hour!

Extra Perks:

  • • Overtime rates
  • • Housing and travel allowances for remote gigs
  • • Tax benefits and salary packaging to boost your take-home pay
  • • Travel nursing in Australia not only pays well but also comes with fantastic benefits!

Are there hospital contracts available?

Yes is the short answer! We have hospital contracts available across Australia for lots of different specialities.

Do you place midwives in rural areas

We absolutely do, we have a high need for midwives willing to support in rural and regional areas, as well as remote. Healthcare facilities and hospitals need outstanding midwives and we have contracts actively available across QLD, NSW and NT.

Is there accommodation for family or pets?

Each client we work with can differ in what accommodation they’re able to provide, but we can help cater for your unique situations on a case-by-case basis. This includes family accommodation, pets, partners, and is decided on an individual circumstance.

Can I expand my clinical skills?

There’s a false rumour going around that once you get a contract, your career progression stops. WRONG! Contract work is one of the best ways to grow your clinical skills. You’ll be experiencing new locations, new skill sets, adapting and learning continuously.
